Confirmation

Confirmation takes place at the end of the 10th grade year, concluding a year of creative inquiry. Each year, the class is structured according to the interests of the participants, but often includes study of current events, a deepening understanding of Tikkun Olam, Jewish holidays and values, as well as individual projects.

Along with the 9th grade class, the confirmands have an opportunity for travel. One year, they go to the Lower East Side for a NYC immigrant experience. There they see firsthand what many of our ancestors had to experience. They also visit Lower East Side restaurants, see matzah being baked and tour one of the many Jewish communities in Brooklyn. Friday night includes attending one of the synagogues in New York.

The alternate year, students go to Washington DC to participate in L’Taken, a retreat and study opportunity organized by the Religious Action Center of the URJ. There, along with other teens from around the country, they learn about various areas of interest, problems ranging from gun control to anti-semitism to gay rights. They choose one topic, research it and have the opportunity to present their thoughts and findings to one of their local representatives in Congress. And of course, the students get to tour Washington DC and see all the attractions and sights.

The two year course of study is designed to prepare students as they take their place in the adult Jewish world – exposing them to community responsibilities, awareness of what they can do to repair the world and to begin the conversation about Jewish life on campus.
