The Roots of Zionism: Resources for further learning

For a history of Zionism from a particularistic Jewish perspective look no further than this lecture, complete with miracles, hidden signs in Kabbalah and Rabbinic prophecies of Messianic end of days. According to which Jewish adherence to the divine promise and antisemitism alone brought us to the moment in the modern age when modern Zionism emerged on the scene.

As we have seen, the context is much greater and meaningful. For a broad historical treatment of the subject from :

  • Zionism and Its Critics 1882-1948 by Arie Dubnov (Academic Course) Associate professor of history and International Affairs and director of the Middle East Program at The George Washington University, Senior Lecturer at the School of History at the University of Haifa, Israel.

Playlist intro: What were Zionism’s social, political, and intellectual origins? How was it related to other forms of Jewish nationalism? To what extent Zionism modeled itself after other national movements?  Did Zionist settlers turn a blind-eye toward the native Palestinian residents of the land, and how did they try to answer the so-called “Arab Question”? And were all Zionists aiming to establish an independent nation-state in Palestine from the onset, or were there other – additional and sometimes competing – interpretations of the Zionist visions? Getting rid of slogans and going beyond hyperbole, this class seeks to answer these and other questions.
