Playlist intro: What were Zionism’s social, political, and intellectual origins? How was it related to other forms of Jewish nationalism? To what extent Zionism modeled itself after other national movements? Did Zionist settlers turn a blind-eye toward the native Palestinian residents of the land, and how did they try to answer the so-called “Arab Question”? And were all Zionists aiming to establish an independent nation-state in Palestine from the onset, or were there other – additional and sometimes competing – interpretations of the Zionist visions? Getting rid of slogans and going beyond hyperbole, this class seeks to answer these and other questions.
