Dear KI Friends,

These High Holy Days of 5787 (2026) are a time to reflect and rededicate ourselves to what matters most. During Yom Kippur, we heard Rabbi Shoshanah Tornberg’s thought-provoking sermon challenging us to think long term and to consider what kind of ancestors we will be. She asked us to think about our choices and actions in terms of our legacy.

We are blessed with a beautiful sanctuary for worship as well as classrooms and meeting spaces where we host religious school, lifelong learning, lifecycle events, and more. It is not just our building that we inherited from previous generations. We have also been given Jewish values, traditions, and practices that we, in turn, pass on to those who come after us.

Caring for our spiritual home requires both effort and funds. Repairing and painting the storage shed is one example of a KI Brotherhood project completed about a year ago. A b. mitzvah project is almost complete, converting room 102 into a play-space where a parent can take a youngster who needs a break from a service or event. A few weeks ago, we completed a major kitchen update funded by the Women of KI. The new commercial-grade refrigerator and dishwasher are investments we expect to last many years, serving us through countless celebrations and events to come.

Building improvements that care for our spiritual home – and the programs that enrich our lives – are possible only with your support. Earlier this year we replaced the leaking office roof. We are now planning important security upgrades to our building. All donations received in response to this High Holy Day Appeal will be earmarked for this security upgrade. If we receive more donations than needed for this project, any excess funds will be used for other building improvements, subject to board approval.

Next, we are focused on long overdue improvements to our bathrooms. Looking farther ahead, our House Committee has developed a comprehensive facilities plan to help us prioritize other needed improvements. We anticipate starting a campaign to fund specific building projects; more information will be shared in the Spring.

Through our collective actions today, we are writing another chapter of the KI legacy – and helping to ensure that KI will continue to be a spiritual home for generations to come.
